Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Where Experts Stay in Zermatt: The Top Bases for Maximum Vertical

Zermatt is car‑free, compact and easy to underestimate when you’re booking accommodation. The village sits at the base of three completely different lift systems: the Sunnegga funicular, the Gornergrat Bahn and the Matterhorn Express. Each one funnels you into a different sector of the mountain.

Where you stay dictates which zone you reach first in the morning, how much time you spend walking through the village in ski boots and on a powder day, whether you’re stepping onto the glacier ahead of the crowd or showing up 40 minutes after the serious skiers have tracked it out.

This isn’t a small detail. Zermatt may look tight on a map, but the walk from Winkelmatten to the Sunnegga funicular is a full 20 minutes on flat ground in ski boots and that gap can matter early in the morning.

Quick Picks: The 4 Best Bases in Zermatt

Base Comparison

Before diving into the full neighborhood breakdown, here’s a quick comparison of the three main bases in Zermatt and the type of skier each one is best suited for.

Base Strengths Trade‑Offs
Winkelmatten • Closest to Matterhorn Express
• Best for glacier, summit routes & Cervinia
• Quiet, residential, chalet‑style stays
• The “Argentiere of Zermatt” for experts
• Long walk to Sunnegga (20 minutes in boots)
• Less nightlife & village energy
• Not ideal for Rothorn‑focused trips
Sunnegga Area • Fastest access to Rothorn & cold snow
• Underground funicular = zero morning bottleneck
• Best for powder laps & efficiency
• Quiet but still walkable to the village
• 15‑minute walk to Matterhorn Express
• Not ideal for glacier or Cervinia days
• Limited chalet‑style options
Village Center • Equal access to all three lift systems
• Best for mixed groups and first‑timers
• Restaurants, apres, and shops at your door
• Best area during non‑ski time
• Not right next to any lift
• Slower to Rothorn than Sunnegga
• Slower to glacier than Winkelmatten

Best Places to Stay in Zermatt

Winkelmatten - For the Glacier and Cervinia

Best for: Expert skiers targeting the glacier and off-piste, groups wanting chalet-style space and Matterhorn views, anyone planning the Cervinia day trip as a priority.

Winkelmatten is Zermatt's quietest neighborhood and a short walk below the main village, with direct Matterhorn views and the best access to the Matterhorn Express gondola. If your trip includes the Klein Matterhorn glacier, serious off-piste off the summit or the Cervinia crossing into Italy, this is where you want to be based.

The character is chalet-style and residential. Less foot traffic, less noise, more space. Groups and families who want a private chalet feel without sacrificing proximity to the mountain will find Winkelmatten the strongest option in the village.

The only real trade off is the walk to the Sunnegga funicular. From Winkelmatten you have to cross the village center, which adds time on mornings when you want early Rothorn laps.

Recommended properties in Winkelmatten:

  • Chalet Altesse - Panoramic Matterhorn views. The right choice for groups of 6 who want luxury self-catering with genuine ski access rather than a hotel. Ski in/Ski out but 10 minute walk to lifts.
  • Berghof - Classic Zermatt chalet-style property in a quiet setting. Good for couples or small groups who want the Matterhorn Express close and the main village walkable.
  • VRBO House - 2 bedroom & 2 bath. Ski in/ski out, 1 minute walk lifts.

Sunnegga Area - For Expert Skiers Targeting Rothorn

Best for: Expert skiers, powder chasers, anyone prioritizing Sunnegga and Rothorn, skiers who want reliable cold snow and quick lift access.

If your trip is built around the Sunnegga and Rothorn sectors which consistently have the best snow quality in the resort and the fastest morning laps, staying within walking distance of the underground funicular is the right call. The funicular is fast, quiet and deposits you at mid-mountain in minutes. You can be skiing Rothorn before most guests in the village have finished breakfast.

The trade-off is that the Matterhorn Express and Cervinia crossing are a 15-minute walk away. For skiers who want to prioritize the glacier and Italy day trips, Winkelmatten is the better base. For skiers who want cold snow, fast morning access and Findeln for lunch, this is it.

Bahnhofstrasse and Village Center - Best Overall Base

Best for: First-time Zermatt visitors, mixed-ability groups, skiers who want to cover all three sectors across a week, those who want restaurants and apres within walking distance.

The Gornergrat Bahn departs from the center of the village, the Sunnegga funicular is a short walk, and the Matterhorn Express is reachable on foot.

The area along Bahnhofstrasse and the village center is the right call for most visitors, first-time Zermatt guests, mixed groups and anyone who wants access to all three lift systems without committing to one sector.

The restaurants, bars, apres-ski and the Bahnhofstrasse shops are all here. This is where Zermatt's village life happens.

The one trade-off versus Sunnegga or Winkelmatten is that you are slightly further from both the funicular and the Matterhorn Express and close enough to walk, but not as tight as staying in those neighborhoods directly.

Getting to Zermatt

Zermatt is car-free, and most visitors arrive by train from Zurich or Geneva via Visp, with drivers parking in Tasch and taking the shuttle train into the village.

Do You Need a Guide?

For the Klein Matterhorn off-piste, the serious glacier terrain off the summit and any itinerary routes that push beyond the marked pistes, a guide is the right call.

The upper mountain is consequential with the scale is bigger than it looks from the lift, crevasse zones require local knowledge and the routes that access the best snow off the back of the glacier are not obvious from the trail map.

For the groomed piste skiing on Sunnegga, Rothorn and Gornergrat, a guide is not necessary unless you want to dive into the off-piste alongside those sectors.
